THE HIDDEN HEART OF PRESTEIGNE

Before the Eighteenth century houses in this area were made using timber framing. Although some of this can be seen from the street, the majority survives behind a rich medley of later facades. This illustrated talk will focus on the evidence of those hidden buildings as well as looking at some of the finest examples in the surrounding countryside. Timber-framed houses were made by anonymous craftsmen whose skill in the use of oak has left us a rich legacy  that can be admired simply for its beauty or, viewed as ‘standing archaeology’, can inform us about the lives of the people who lived in them.

Duncan James is a buildings archaeologist specialising in the research, recording and analysis of timber framed buildings in Herefordshire and the surrounding counties.
