STEPHEN JOHNSON ON BRITTEN AND SHOSTAKOVICH
The British composer Benjamin Britten and the Russian Dmitri Shostakovich only came to know each other relatively late in life, and politics as well as geography kept them from spending much time in each other’s company. And yet each recognised in the other something very close, artistically and personally. Stephen Johnson explores this intense kinship through the music, and shows how the terms of the relationship were forged long before these two giants of twentieth-century music actually met.
